Assassination Attempts on Thaksin: Real News or Fake News?

Introduction:

Towards to end of the year, like most people, I began to make plans for the holidays and was in a joyous mood. The year 2009 was coming to a close. I was on Twitter, talking to a number of friends. Then suddenly, Thaksin, Thailand’s former Prime Minister, exploded on twitter with activity.

Quick Translation:

  • “I want to wish you a happy new year… I went on helicopter to inspect Cambodia’s capital and there are new investments in the past three years…..At this time, to be brave at heart is considered the medicine for health……..Most of the news, has little sense to it, but seriously, they are trying to take my life away……And interfere with the Thai judicial process.”

I have started Thai Intelligence News Blog since about 2008, and often I write about the assassination attempts on Thaksin. Personally, I  have tracked down three known attempts on Thaksin’s life, but Thaksin said there have been four attempts on his life. The first assassination attempt on Thaksin, that I am sure of, is the “Car Bomb.” Then, the second, it is the so-called “Opportunity Window Frenzy” and the third attempt on Thaksin life, was “Inside Cambodia.”

  • Why kill Thaksin? Many Thai people just shrug off the question. It is a common saying in Thailand, if you are “Good, Stand-Out, and Well-Known” you will be destroyed, from jealousy. Thaksin popularity rivaled everyone in Thailand’s history. And the Traditional Elite Thai Establishment was both jealous and weary what Thaksin will do with his popularity.

(Up-Dated) Again, a few days ago, Thaksin’s son and daugthers, had to come out and deny that Thaksin is very sick and in the hospital, as an edited picture of Thaksin in a hospital bed, surfaced on the social media and social network. This is not the first time, this had occurred to Thaksin, and this type of thing, indicates how much hatred is targeted toward Thaksin, by many Thais. Even, earlier, a rumored surfaced that Thaksin was dying of cancer, and Thaksin even showed a picture of himself, pulling his hair, to show that he is not under-going kemo therapy.

One day, in a posh five-star hotel lobby in Bangkok, a woman of Thai Royal Blood and heritage, confronted Thaksin. She pointed her finger at Thaksin’s face, and said quote: “I am going to destroy you.”

Thaksin himself, summarizes his problems with the Elite Thai Establishment, as simply, his failure to sprinkle water on the top of the tree but focus on watering the root.

For many years now, Thaksin, have been living with the shadow of his death. Often, the shadow have threatened to catch up with the living Thaksin.

1)

Thaksin & Thailand’s Political Divide:

Pro-Democracy Thais will say the Development of Democracy in Thailand, has a great deal to do with Thaksin. And the pro-Elite Establishment Thais will say, the survival of the Elite Establishment, depends on the defeat of Thaksin.

The “Big Disagreement” many find themselves involved with, is if Thaksin and the development of Democracy in Thailand are related or not, and if related what is the correct way to view Thaksin? The fact is Thaksin has galvanized millions of Thais, mostly the grassroots, to be interested in Democracy. But million others, do not know or what to make of that reality. To many, Thaksin is a “Quagmire.”

The “Big Agreement” most observer of Thailand in recent times, seems to have agreed on, however, is that Thaksin is the most “Divisive Figure” in Thailand’s history.

That is correct.

  • Thaksin, as an issue, is similar to “Democracy, Liberty and Justice” in that all are a very divisive concept in Thailand. All of them, like Thaksin and Democracy, goes directly against aged old Thai Elite Establishment concept, like Lese Majeste and the Patronage System.

To the Elite Thai Establishment, “Getting Rid of Thaksin” and “Getting Rid of Democracy” is the same thing.

Recently, with most neutral global observer of Thailand saying a “Judicial Coup” had taken place to stop the amending of the military constitution, with the court telling Parliament to stop the process, many local and foreign press, like Bangkok Post and Reuters, said “The Amending of the Military Constitution” was about Thaksin.

Stopping Thaksin, and at the same time, “Stopping Democracy” have been the Elite establishment objective for years, and thus it is understandable why the likes of Bangkok Post and Reuters, could have just say it was about Thaksin.

  • The 2006 Coup is one example of how the Elite Establishment went about getting rid of Thaksin, and stopping Democracy. The “Disbandment of Political Parties” close to Thaksin is another example of getting rid of Thaksin. The going after Thaksin corruption, exclusively in a systemic way with dedicated units, is another example of getting rid of Thaksin. Being against the amending the Military Constitution and accepting a Reconciliation Bill is the latest, and another example of getting rid of Thaksin.

The assassination attempts on Thaksin is another way of getting rid of Thaksin.

2)

New Kid on The Block:

A Popular Politician the Establishment Needs to Destroy

Since Thaksin came to power at about 2000 in Thailand, through winning an election landslide, the objective of the anti democracy, Elite Establishment, has been to “Get Rid” of Thaksin.

Even before Thaksin, won that first general election landslide, the Elite Establishment has been after Thaksin. The Right Wing, TDRI, and the pro Abhisit Nation, for example, hounded Thaksin’s economic policies, since before the election, during the election, and after the election.

Thaksin himself says, since entering to Thai politics, “Four Assassination Attempts” have been made on his life.

Thaksin says it is a combination of luck and security, that he still lives today. Indeed, Thaksin, has a long track record, of having tight security, that is often adjusted to emerging threats, very quickly.

But accepting the facts, that the Thai Elite Establishment is going after Thaksin’s life can be difficult, to many observer of Thailand.

  • Take the Foreign Correspondent Club of Thailand (FCCT) for example. The FCCT refuses to condemn the imprisonment of a Thai person, Somyot. Somyot, a journalist, is being jailed for lese majeste or insulting Royalty offense. Lese majeste, most say, is draconian. However, as one director of FCCT put it, quote: “Somyot was the editor of The Voice of Thaksin Magazine” where that director of the FCCT, calls Voice of Thaksin Magazine, quote: “A Rag.”

That FCCT Director, and people like him, indicates, foreign journalist here in Thailand, have also taken a side on the “Great Thai Political Divide” with many, being anti Thaksin.  Another foreign journalist, at Time Magazine, who has a long track record of highly critical articles on Thaksin, on the side-line, helps promotes business belonging to the Abhisit Democrat Party people.

  • How can a journalist perform with ethics and morality, without them being neutral, and when they have taken a side?

How can such journalist, who have taken an anti Thaksin side, understand and believe, that Thaksin’s life, is often threatened in Thailand, by the Elite Establishment. How can such people accept, that there have been many assassination attempts on Thaksin.

3)

Drug Lord & The Price on Thaksin’s Head:

One of the first time, the term, “Assassination”, as related to Thaksin, came to be in Thailand was around 2001 to 2002, when Thaksin launched his “War on Drugs.”

Shortly, after the War on Drugs, there were talk that a drug lord had put a price on Thaksin’s head. Subsequently, news of a price on Thaksin’s head spread and became a rumor. But word from journalist, is of a very cautious Thaksin.

But no other issue about Thaksin is more controversial, even to today, than Thaksin’s “War on Drugs.” This issue, have left many, who are involved with Thailand, bitter about Thaksin. And in that bitterness of Thaksin, many have come to rejects Thaksin, and everything that has to do with Thaksin.

And thus one has, again, for example, that director at the FCCT, who is not compassionate about the Somyot’s situation on lese majeste, because that Director is anti Thaksin. And in fact, most at the FCCT could care less, about Thaksin, if Thaksin is a target of assassination or had he galvanized the grass-roots towards Democracy.

  • To many like people at the FCCT, Thaksin is just simply hated and shunned.

When speaking of Thaksin’s “War on Drugs” two subjects comes to mind, to a neutral person.

First; the so-called 2,400 victims of Thaksin’s War on Drugs, where most people who are well read would have by now come across the Bangkok Pundit Blog. But just quickly, for those that may have not, Bangkok Pundit Blog, proved with facts, logic and reasons, that there were no 2,400 killed by the Thaksin’s War on Drugs.

The second issue, as related to Thaksin’s “War on Drugs” for a neutral person, is the price tag put on Thaksin’s head, by “A Drug Lords.”

4)

Thaksin’s Security: Always On Alert

Thaksin’s “War on Drugs” was effective, in stopping the flow of drugs into Thailand. For months, before Thaksin launched his “War on Drugs”, on Thai TV, practically everyday, were news of some out of mind, half crazy, drug addict, taking someone hostage. The Thai people were outraged.

Thaksin took action, and within a few months, even Thailand’s intelligence apparatus, reported that the Burmese Wa Army, that was selling to Thailand with a major portion of illicit drugs, was losing a great deal of fund, as a result of Thaksin’s “War on Drugs.”

News subsequently surfaced, that the Burmese Wa Army, has set up a price on Thaksin’s life. The price to kill Thaksin, to end Thailand “War on Drugs”, was about US$3 million.

With that threat on Thaksin’s life, in response, is what would “Characterize” Thaksin’s personal security philosophy. The philosophy is, Thaksin is always “On Alert.”

  • For example, with the Wa Army threat, Thaksin changed his personal car, to be a “Bullet Proof” Volkswagon. The security detail, in guarding Thaksin was beefed up. The number of patrol car that went with Thaksin’s caravans of official cars was also increased, with these security cars, each of them, sits 4 to 5 heavily armed security guards.

Also, during that time, with news of the price on Thaksin life, from the Wa Army, advance security would also inspect the destination that Thaksin was heading, 2 to 3 hours ahead of time to clear the area. Most of Thaksin’s normal routine, like going shopping with his family, were canceled.

That was about 10 years ago, that Thaksin’s “War on Drugs” occurred with the price tag on Thaksin’s life. It was the first threat on Thaksin’s life, since he entered Thai politics.

About 10 years later, last month, was the latest news on the assassination attempt on Thaksin. This latest assassination news center on Thaksin planned visit to a small Myanmar town, on the Thai border, towards the end of 2012.

Assassination Plan in Myanmar?

Wall Street Journal’s journalist, James Hookway, on November 6, 2012, reported on the news of an assassination threat of Thaksin, in Myanmar.

  • The Wall Street Journal’s Head Lined the article: “Former Thai Leader, Claiming Threat, Alters Myanmar Visit.”

The Report Follows:

BANGKOK—Former Thai leader Thaksin Shinawatra showed he hasn’t lost his knack for roiling Thailand six years after a coup there ousted him from power and triggered a self-imposed exile. This time, his family and lawyer say, he is altering a planned visit to neighboring Myanmar because of an assassination threat from unnamed adversaries.

The former telecommunications mogul plans to meet Myanmar President Thein Sein after his arrival on Thursday in the capital Naypyitaw, but he initially arranged to see visiting Thai businessmen and thousands of supporters in Tachilek, on the Myanmar side of the border with Thailand in the Golden Triangle region know for its drug trade.

That leg of the trip was called off Tuesday, five days after Myanmar police said they discovered a weapons cache in the area, which prompted Mr. Thaksin’s camp to claim the former premier’s foes were planning to kill him.

James Hookwell said officials in Myanmar and Thailand expressed doubt about the credibility of the plot, which was evoked by Thaksin’s lawyer, Noppadon Pattama, and his son, Panthongtae Shinawatra. Also, in Naypyitaw, Police Maj. Min Kyaw Thu said the case was drugs-related and was under investigation. “It has nothing to do with Mr. Thaksin,” the major said. “There is absolutely no plot to assassinate Mr. Thaksin.”

And in Shan State, James Hookwell said, where Tachilek is located, an official with the political arm of the state army, which cooperates with the police, also said in a telephone interview that discovery of the arms cache, consisting of ammunition and three rocket-propelled grenades, was related to the thriving local drug trade. And in Thailand, Lt. Gen. Paradorn Pattanathabutr said it was unclear whether the weapons seizure was related to the visit.

Skepticism: A Common Reaction:

James Hookwell, gives a good overview of what most people think of, when they hear the news of any assassination plot on Thaksin.

  • To sum up what most observer think, is the news of assassinating of Thaksin are  “News that is Very Difficult to Believe.”  In the Wall Street Journal, he writes:

Still, the drama is typical of the atmosphere in Thailand whenever Mr. Thaksin orbits closer to the country from his self-imposed exile, which he spends mostly in Dubai. This time, analysts say, the alleged plot enables him to play the victim as his political foes step up the pressure on the government led by his younger sister, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra.

  • “The Thaksin assassination plot, thinly tethered to reality, has evolved into political theater along the usual partisan lines,” Bangkok-based security and risk consultancy PSA Asia said in a client note Tuesday.

In recent weeks, antigovernment protests have begun to swell, many focusing on the influence of Ms. Yingluck’s brother on the government from overseas, which both Shinawatras deny. A new group called Protect Siam has emerged, drawing 10,000 people to its first protest in October. Its leader, retired Gen. Boonlert Kaewprasit, told reporters Sunday that he plans a rally for later November in its bid to force Ms. Yingluck’s government from office and, if necessary, to call on the military to stage another coup like the one that ousted Mr. Thaksin in 2006.

The opposition Democrat Party also has begun holding occasional rallies over the past few months. It stops short of calling for a coup, yet analysts say street politics might be the key to holding back the Yingluck administration’s ambitions to bring back Mr. Thaksin to Thailand despite a 2008 corruption conviction—which he says was politically motivated.

Analysts say, Ms. Yingluck’s political opponents are refocusing on the polarizing influence of Mr. Thaksin to erode her popularity, especially after several key Thaksin lieutenants were elevated to senior government positions in a cabinet reshuffle last month, raising speculation that the government will move again soon to introduce an amnesty law.

Pavin Chachavalpongpun, a professor at Kyoto University’s Center for Southeast Asian Studies, says “it shows that many people have underestimated Ms. Yingluck and that her enemies now have to focus on attacking her brother.”

7)

Wikileaks

Of the entire article by the Wall Street Journal, on the question: “Was There An Assassination Plot on Thaksin in Myanmar?” was answered in the article by a single source.

That source is a security consultant, PSA Asia. The Bangkok-based security and risk consultancy PSA Asia said in a client note, quote:

  • “The Thaksin assassination plot, thinly tethered to reality, has evolved into political theater along the usual partisan lines.”

Does PSA Asia statement mean, “There Was Not An Assassination Attempt on Thaksin in Myanmar?” Or the fact is, the PSA Asia statement only say, in PSA Asia opinion, the news of assassination is “Thinly Tethered to Reality?”

Like the Thaksin Twitter, I mentioned at the start of this report, that came in close to new year, there I was, excited, as it was getting close to the end of the year. And celebration will be all over Thailand. It is a time, most Thai people will be in a very good mood, happy, smiling and laughing. That year, I plan to visit a mountainous area, to sit in the late afternoon sun, and have a bottle of great Thai wine, at my favorite Thai winery.

As I was at a gas station, to have a few basic car mechanics check, like brakes for the long trip to the mountains and filling up my car with gas for the trip, a friend of Thai Intelligence News Blog send over a text message that said, quote:

  • “Get on the Internet Fast, Wikileaks Out with Information on Assassination attempt of Thaksin.”

Most long-term observer of Thailand, are often surprised, by how Thai and foreigners, cling on to make analysis and decisions on Thailand, based on “What is Apparent” and discounting, things, like what PSA Asia calls “Thinly Tethered to Reality.”

The amount of inside news on Thailand, revealed by Wikileaks is massive. Most of the information, on Thailand, by Wikileaks, before the leaks became news, would probably be classified under “Thinly Tethered to reality.”

Wikileaks should have made people realized, quote: “What we see going on in Thailand, is just the tip of a well hidden iceberg.” For many years now, there is nothing about Thailand that is “Apparent” and so often, the only thing that is left to go on, is just simply “Glimpse into Reality.”

As difficult it is to accept, Thai Intelligence News is the only English Language Blog that has been reporting on intricate plots to assassinate Thaksin.  Now Wikileak has the USA ambassador to Thailand, quoting sources who told him, on the possibility of a plot to assassinate Thaksin.

When Thai Intelligence News broke those assassination attempts on Thaksin report, several media such as Political Prisoner Thailand contacted Thai Intelligence News. Thai Intelligence News was also contacted by a global level national security unit and a global level wire service. All of them, Political Prisoner Thailand Blog, the security unit and the wire service, all wanted “Credible & Reliable Information” from Thai Intelligence News.

“You must read everything in the local language press, because the local English language press censors news,” I told all three of them and telling them, if they want references to every bit of information I provide, for them to go and research all the local language news themselves.

  • What is “Credible and Reliable” information on assassinations’ plans and attempts? Is there such as thing?

In the final analysis, would the result of a court judgment, be the only reliable information, like concrete proof of assassination attempts. And knowing how the Thai court system favors the Elite Establishment are court judgment reliable, in exposing truth and facts?

Is the source, that the USA Ambassador to Thailand quoted on the assassination plot of Thaksin reliable? Is it security units like PSA Asia reliable?

8)

Worried Son and Daughters

Thaksin was born in San Kamphaeng, Chiang Mai province. He lived in the village of San Kamphaeng until he was 15, then moved to Chiang Mai city to study at Montfort College.

One of the most famous picture of Thaksin, was a picture of Thaksin as a boy, around 10 years old.

In that picture, Thaksin was playing in a field, a pineapples growing field. The picture is famous, because many people say, Thaksin started from a humble beginning with potential like everyone else. But for some unknown reason, that boy in the pineapple field, about 30 years after that picture was taken, was worth several US$ billions.

At 16, Thaksin helped run one of his father’s cinemas. Thaksin married Potjaman Damapong in 1980. They have one son, Panthongtae and two daughters, Pintongtha and Peathongtarn. They divorced in 2008, from all sort of strains. The Thaksin family, is considered very close, caring and very loving.

While global and local journalists write their report about the Myanmar assassination threat for their global readers to consume, it was Thaksin’s children who finally stopped Thaksin from visiting a Myanmar border town, on safety concern.

What many journalist failed to point out, is that the assassination threat on Thaksin in Myanmar is an issue, bought to attention, originally by Thaksin’s son, Panthongtae. Anyone can question Thaksin’s son, for being politicized. Thaksin’s son, Panthongtae (Oak), has long been involved in Thai politics.

And for journalists such as James Hookwell, to come out with some “Theory” why Thaksin’s son might want to “Play Up” or “Create”  the assassination on Thaksin news in Myanmar, for some benefit, that is understandable and acceptable.

  • However, Thaksin’s two daughters rarely gets involved in politics, and when they become news, as related to Thaksin, it is often about how they miss their exile to live in a foreign country, father, and are concerned about him.

The fact is, Thaksin two daughters, have had to come out to make “Repeated Plea” to their father, Thaksin, not to visit the Myanmar border town. The fact is, also, up until the point that the two daughters began making pleas to Thaksin to stay away from Myanmar, Thaksin was still going to go visit the Myanmar border town. Thaksin’s son, also called on his father to cancel his trip to the Myanmar border town.

  • Thaksin’s son talk of security of his father in Myanmar, bought him under skeptic’s pressure to provide concrete and conclusive information on the assassination threat on Thaksin in Myanmar.

Thaksin’s son, in response, incited the name, Panlop, to back him up.

Panlop, a former big shot at Thailand’s Internal Security Operations Command, was a key and integral part of the Elite Establishment, and Panlop knew of most of what was occurring behind the scene in Thailand. Panlop defected to the Thaksin camp, and provided Thaksin, with information, that put together the pieces of the puzzle of what had been going on in Thailand, like who did what with who, when and where, for Thaksin to see.

Panlop, also took center stage, with the task of assassinating Thaksin.

Oak’s assertion that there was a plot to assassinate Thaksin in Myanmar border town, essentially, fell flat, after Panlop declined to play ball with Oak, and refused to reveal any information. The Oak and Panlop playing to a different tune, can also be seen in Thailand’s Defense Minister, who said, quote: “Oak is in water deeper than he is used to.”

9)

False Alarm & The Embarrassment:

Thaksin’s family has cause to be concern about Thaksin’s safety. Since early on, after Thaksin entered politics, there have been “Safety Related Events” like the price on Thaksin’s head. But there were other events, that have alarmed the Thaksin family.

About 2001, a Boeing 737-400 parked in the Bangkok airport, exploded and burst into flames.

Thaksin just won a landslide election victory to become Thailand’s prime minister. And Thailand, under Thaksin early years, was gaining widespread recognition as a new Asia power-house, after falling under crippling economic crisis, but was fast emerging. Picture of Thaksin, zooming off to global events, was common.

At Thailand’s Don Muang Airport, then the only Bangkok international airport, it was a particularly hot day, especially for the planes sitting on the concrete runways or stationed at the gate. A flight attendant at a Thai Airways plane, decided to turn on the air-conditioning to cool the interior of one of the plane.

That plane that the flight attendant turned on the air conditioning, in about 4 to 5 hours, that plane would be heading out of Thailand, carrying Thailand’s prime minister and much of his cabinet, on a fresh diplomatic trip, to again, beef up Thailand’s position as an emerging power-house of Asia.

About an hour later, after the flight attendant turned on the air conditioning, that plane erupted into flames after the sound of an explosion. News of the destruction of the plane came at about the same time Thaksin and his cabinet, started to head to the airport.

Thaksin responded that it was a failed assassination attempt on his life, that a bomb had been placed on the plane, but went off early.

10)

Weak Crime Scene Investigation Ability:

Several months later, after all sort of news hitting the Thai press, from all sort of people, pointing to all sorts of possible cause of the plane explosion and fire, the manufacturer of the plane, after an investigation, said the fire was caused by the flight attendant turning on the air conditioning of the plane, while the main plane engine was not running.

That shut down of the plane’s main engine caused the air conditioning unit to hear up, to explosion condition and causing the fire.

  • While in the end, Thaksin was greatly “Ridiculed” for faulting the explosion and the fire of that plane to be part of an assassination attempt, that Thaksin reaction “Alarmed” many.

For the first time, in recent memory, the word “Assassination” was linked to some “Sophisticated” plan, like a mysterious explosion of a plane. The explosion of the plane, opened up, all sort of possible scenario. Additionally, many worried, about the level of effectiveness of Thailand’s “Crime Scene Investigation” units, as no one in Thailand, appeared capable, of saying, what actually happened to the plane, as it exploded and engulf into fire.

11)

Thaksin’s Normal Life in Thailand

Thaksin got super rich, in the US$ billions, very quickly, like it took him ten years. And because of that quick wealth build-up, his life style never had a chance to catch up. Thaksin has been living in the same house with his wife and children for ages, bought since both of them started to became rich business people. After entering politics, Thaksin and his family did not move to a better protected compound or carried a safer life style.

Thaksin, popular with the Thai people, still jumped out of caravans of official cars, and go and mingle with the people who come to greet him. On the family free time, the family, still go out to shopping malls together, for example, thinly protected by body guards, and carry on normal life, eating at food court, even after entering politics.

At restaurants and shopping malls, often, the family or some members of the family are stalked and protested. Very often, some freaked out radical person, would start shouting at member of Thaksin’s family, at all sort of places. Even with those actions, nothing changed much with the Thaksin family.

  • They are a public family and open to the public. Therefore, from security point of view, the Thaksin family is terribly at risk. And Thaksin house is perhaps the worse. The house, bought some 10 years earlier, is not a mega-secure, high walled, with a multiple ways to access the main street. For Thaksin, to get to his house, he has to go this way and that way, pass this and passes that, where there is very little, as far as alternative route.

That house is in a small street, off other small streets, that eventually is linked to the main street. The main street, in that Thaksin’s house part of town, doesn’t go off in many directions, meaning it is not a major intersection, linking of big part of towns.

One morning, police found a car suspicious car, parked on the side of the main street, that Thaksin, in getting to or leaving his house, will have to pass. In the trunk of the car, were massive amounts of explosive. Someone wanted Thaksin dead, and was going to blow up his motorcade.

12)

“Car Bong”

In the Thai language, “Bong” mean “Crazy” and so the “Car Bomb” incident, to assassinate Thaksin, was called “Car Bong” by most of the Thai press, to indicate, that it was “Fake News.”

So again, one morning, a suspicious car was found, with a trunk loaded with explosive, near Thailand’s prime minster, Thaksin house, on the side of the road, where Thaksin motorcade would pass.

  • The reaction is as expected. By the first and second year, that Thaksin entered politics, Thai media have taken a side, in “The Great Thai Political Divide.” And in implementation, that divide, most Thai press turned anti Thaksin. Being anti Thaksin, most Thai press would turn to “Ridiculing and Criticizing Thaksin.”

Thus, as far as the anti Thaksin, Pro Elite Establishment press in Thailand is concerned, the discovery of the car full of explosives, was time was for the “Ridicule and Critical” propaganda machines to be turned on. So the “Propaganda Machine” was turned on.

  • Literally, for months and months, as the detail of the “Car Bomb” and the investigations into the people involved in the assassination of Thaksin surfaced, in most of the local and English language press, it was only about “Car Bong” and “Car Crazy.” It was just purely “Amazing” how editors at newspaper in Thailand, would tear to shreds all evidence that points to an assassination attempt of Thaksin.

The extent Thai press took the “Car Bong” and “Car Crazy” to just unbelievable level. The press, simply put, turned into the defense for the charged and accused. For example, the police would capture a key soldier as being involved and immediately, most of the local press would report that the soldier, in police questioning, has no access to the type of bomb found. And even before forensic result from crime scene investigations, most local press would say there is no forensic evidence to link this and that culprit, being questioned by police, to the “Car Bomb.”

For months on end, most of the local press went on a frenzy of “Ridiculing and Criticizing” Thaksin on the “Car Bomb” incident.

13)

The “Car Bong” in Reality

Eventually, mounting evidence bought sanity back to news reporting. One by one, all the Thai language and English language press that called the “Car Bomb” as being “Car Bong” began to report on the police investigations, straight. The “Bomb” in the “Car” was, quote:

(Quick Translation: About 3.5 Pounds of C4. About 10.75 Kilo of TNT. And about 17.33 Kilo of Ammonium Nitrate Fuel!)

Thai Rath, the local Thai language newspaper with largest circulation in Thailand, headline in 2006, quote:

แฉแผนฆ่าอำมหิต ตามยิงซ้ำ ถ้าบึมทักษิณไม่ตาย”

  • In translation of that Thai Rath head line into English, it says, quote: “Expose of The Thaksin Assassination of Plan! Follow Up with Bullets, if Bomb Fails to Kill.” Thai Rath Reports:

Failed at Killing Thaksin, Comes The 2006 Coup

At about 2004, a plane sitting idle exploded into flames, and the concept “A Prime Minister of Thailand Being A Target of Assassination” was injected into Thai political thinking. The “Drug Lord” price on Thaksin head another “Possible Assassination News” that was imprinted into Thais. And at about 2006 there was a “High Profile” assassination attempt on Thaksin, with a car loaded with explosive being “Concrete Evidence” but the attempt was foiled.

All in all, at that point, there have been “Three Events” involving question about Thaksin’s life and death. From a security related point of view, the situation, was getting shaky.

In the subsequent investigation, of that assassination attempt of Thaksin in the car bomb attempt, police went in, to investigate the plotters computers.

  • The computer forensic experts were sent in and on the plotters computers, the police found statements, pointing to an impending coup by the Thai military. Not long after, the attempt to kill Thaksin with a car bomb, a military coup took place in 2006, when Thaksin was in New York, USA, to address that United Nations. After the coup, Thaksin drifted from country to country, for several years, after the United Kingdom, revoked Thaksin’s visa.

Local press, both Thai and English, that have for years and years, been mostly anti Thaksin, says the people of Bangkok welcomed the coup. Foreign news agencies, says it was a “Bloodless Coup.” The Thai military propaganda apparatus went to the tilt, organizing bouts of Thais going to the military, stationed all over Bangkok, to show support.

On the front pages of newspapers, days and weeks after the coup, were pictures of tank soldiers taking in, for example large amount of flowers, as gift to show appreciation of the coup. Other picture showed gifts being “Boxes of Red Bull.”

Weeks later, several pro Thaksin Blog in Thailand, with people who have gone to visit Thaksin in the UK, where Thaksin settled, tells of a Thaksin, quote: “In Deep Gloom.”

Some of those people wrote in their blogs, that Thaksin, would walk out of his residence in the UK, late at night, often, with a London that was fog covered, to nearby shops, often alone. One blogger, calling himself, “Thaksin You Will Never Walk Alone” said he went to visit Thaksin in London, and saw Thaksin, walk out of the house, and slowly, “Disappeared” into the thick fog.

Thaksin it appears has escaped the assassination plot on his life in Thailand, to face a coup that left him, exile out of Thailand, only to walk alone among the heavy fogs of London.

15)

Thaksin Ousted to London:

Back in Thailand, the wind of change swept far and wide, after the coup. If the Russian Revolution executed the Czar Family, so that there will never be a return to the past, in Thailand, the coup maker were going to wipe Thaksin off the face of Thailand’s history.

The anti democracy, Elite Establishment, saw continuing of “Elite Rule of Thailand” from a combination of strategy, which are:

  • The major strategy or the macro level plan is first, put in a new military constitution that guarantee establishment power is put into effect; secondly, go after Thaksin with corruption cases to wipe him out from Thai politics for good, and thirdly, call an election, where all the establishment power, will go towards guaranteeing that Abhisit’s Democrat Party won.

The sub-strategy, in case, the macro strategy failed, is to keep alive the Yellow Shirts, as a destabilizing factor in Thai politics, to be used, to put into place, establishment friendly political forces. The yellow Shirts, simply, is to play the enforcement role in Thai politics, for getting anything the elite establishment wants.

With those strategy in place, the anti democracy Elite Establishment, went getting rid of Thaksin, the most popular Prime Minister in Thailand’s history, that won a landslide election win, under a “Democratic System” that the “People’s Constitution Guaranteed.”

16)

Election Win Revives Thaksin:

There was a problem for the anti democracy Elite Thai Establishment!

After a few years of the 2006 coup government and a very much undemocratic military constitution in place, an election was held. Thaksin still won the election, by a landslide as usual. In Thailand, Thaksin is still hugely popular in the E-Sarn Region and Northern Thailand Region, with a sizable support base, in the Central Planes and Bangkok.

  • And a number of polls says, the majority of the Thai people did not favor giving flowers to soldiers staging coup, but the polls says the majority of Thai people, want “Democracy.” The Elite Establishment, was disappointed by the election loss, but anticipating the outcome, and thus, turned on its sub-strategy.

The Yellow Shirts came out to destabilize Thailand, occupying the Government House and closing down the new airport. They also went around Bangkok, doing just about whatever they wanted to do, from invading TV stations and closing them down, to going around in pick-up truck carrying guns and firing on their enemies.

  • If that was not enough to destabilized Thailand, the Independent Units, like the Constitutional Court, the Election Unit, and the Anti Corruption Unit, put the nail into the coffin of Thaksin’s political parties.

After all of that destabilizing, the military then stepped in and “Put Together A Deal” inside a military camp, for a Thaksin supporter, Nevin, to defect Thaksin to instead support Abhisit of the Democrat Party, as the Thai Prime Minister. Part of the deal, was that Nevin, would face no corruption investigations, and indeed Nevin escaped all pending corruption cases.

17)

Opportunity Window & Assassination Plots

So in summary, a few years after the 2006 coup, there was an election, where Thaksin party won, by a landslide and Thaksin returned to Thailand. And the Elite Thai Establishment, kicked in their sub-strategy, in “Destabilizing Thailand” mainly with the Yellow Shirts and the Independent Units.

In the mean time, Thaksin was in Thailand and there were opportunity windows to kill him.

For Thaksin, after the election win, it was a chance to return to Thailand, having left since being kicked out by the 2006 coup. Thaksin, saw that he was still popular, despite everything, as his political party had won the election, by a landslide, again. The famous picture is, of Thaksin kissing that tarmac of Thailand airport runway, as he stepped off the plane, in a “Triumph” return to Thailand.

But while Thaksin was showing how much he loved Thailand with that “Kiss” it is during this time, that Thaksin himself, revealed that several attempts was made to assassinate him.

In fact, even before Thaksin got off the plane and kiss the “Ground” of Thailand, to show his love, several people in his political party, were warning Thaksin, that the Thai Elite Establishment, will try to kill him.

  • Only weeks in Thailand after returning, Thaksin start calling the period, quote:  “The time of frenzy assassinations plots and attempts.” Thaksin did not give many details, but two of these assassination attempts were reported on, by the local Thai language press.

The first assassination attempt that became news was about a plot to use RPG (Rocket Propelled Grenade) to attack Thaksin’s working office. That plan was foiled. Thaksin abruptly, moved his office to safe location. Then the second plan, called for a team of hit men, positioning where Thaksin’s motorcade would pass and had to slow, and the hit men team would assaults the motorcade with weapons of war. This plan was also foiled, as Thaksin’s security, got news of where the ambush attack would likely be located.

  • There was no doubt about it, Thailand was a very dangerous place for Thaksin. The longer he stay, the likely, the assassination is going to be a success. But his political party won the election, and he is the symbol of the party, Prime Minster or not. There is no running away. The only response, was up the level of his security.

Perhaps luckily, what got Thaksin kicked out of Thailand again, for a second time, after the 2006 coup kicked him out, was a corruption court judgment, against Thaksin. Thaksin was found guilty, of giving the OK, to his wife, to bid for state land, in an auction. For that crime, he was the sentence to jail. Instead of going to jail, Thaksin fled Thailand, and went to resided mostly in the Middle East, city of Dubai.

After Thasksin exiled Thailand, all the pieces began to fall into place again for the anti Democracy, Elite Thai Establishment.

More destabilization added on top of more destabilization, and finally, Thaksin’s government, just having won an election landslide, collapse, giving the rise of Abhisit’s government, with Nevin defecting.

18)

Friendship & Adversity

In summary, at this point, Thaksin, had to exile Thailand, to escape corruption verdict, not even a year, after his party won an election landslide. And subsequent “Destabilization” by the Yellow Shirts and the Independent Units, coupled by a deal from the Thai military, a knife in the back of Thaksin from Nevin, all that got Abhisit of the Democrat Party, to become Thailand’s Prime Minister.

  • And things looked bleak for Thaksin.

The Elite Thai Establishment was moving according to its plan, in consolidating Thailand under it rule. A military constitution was in place and the Yellow Shirts in its command. Nothing it seem, can stand in the Elite Establishment path. Even winning elections, however many times under the democratic system, by Thaksin, appeared to have meant little. Power, in Thailand, it seems, had been stolen away by the Elite Establishment.

Yet fundamentally, things was not all that bad for Thaksin.

  • More polls were conducted, and even a university conducted a study on Democracy. And the polls and the university study confirmed yet again, the Thai people wanted and supported Democracy. And with the Abhisit government in power, a poll of the Thai people, said corruption, was the worse in Thailand’s history. Human Rights and Freedom of Expression also tanked to lowest level in Thailand’s history, under Abhisit. Economic, Abhisit, just mostly copied Thaksin’s policies.

Fundamentally, if an election was held again, there was no doubt, Thaksin would win again. His support continued to be strong in Thailand.

With few friends at the top of Thailand, and mostly supported by the grass-roots, it is during this time, that Thaksin’s friend, Hun Sen, invited Thaksin to visit Cambodia. Then Cambodia appointed Thaksin to the country’s Economic Adviser Status. The problem is, Cambodia sits next to Thailand, and a visit to Cambodia by Thaksin, would bring Thaksin, close to Thailand.

  • There was a great deal of risk, for both Thaksin and Hun Sen, for Thaksin to be close, physically, to Thailand. Apart from the obvious, outraging the Thai Elite Establishment, Thaksin’s life, would again, be in reach, of the Thai Elite Establishment.

Thaksin and Hun Sen, were not long-time friends.

In fact, it was an incident in Cambodia’s capital Phanon Phen that helped propelled Thaksin and Hun Sen, to become the best of friends.

After about a year, that Thaksin came to power in Thailand, rumor spread in Cambodia’s capital that a Thai actress, insulted the people of Cambodia. Based on that rumor, the Thai people and Thai business in Phanom Phen were attacked. Thailand’s embassy, in Phanon Phen, was burned and ransacked to the ground.

It was a time of great fear for the Thai people inside Cambodia, particularly the capital. Thais there looked for places to hide for safety. Gangs of Cambodian youth roamed the street, looking for Thai people to attack and Thai businesses to attack.

Thaksin, in response, was going to send in Thai troops to help rescue Thai people caught in the chaos in Phanon Phen, and to protect Thai installations.

But after consulting with Hun Sen, a number of agreements were made, averting an escalation of the crisis if troops from Thailand enter Cambodia. But with Thaksin and Hun Sen talk, the crisis began cool down and the situation began to return to normal. In the end, Cambodia agreed to pay for all damages, and most Thai people were safe in Cambodia.

Since then, Thaksin and Hun Sen, become close friend. And Thaksin was going to visit Cambodia, where the Elite Establishment of Bangkok, have for decade, felt that Thai Culture and Heritage, is superior, than Cambodia.

19)

Thaksin in Cambodia:

Being in control of Thailand was not enough for the elite establishment and its proxy, Abhisit. Thaksin was heading for a visit to Cambodia, where Cambodia, seen as being inferior to the Elite Establishment in Bangkok, sits right next to Thailand. Apart from Cambodia being inferior, there was the Phra Vihear Relics. The relics, is an issue of great importance to an ally of the Thai Elite Establishment, being the Extreme Far Right Nationalist in Thailand.

In the Elite Thai establishment reasoning, Thaksin, was selling out Thailand’s national interest, by aligning himself to Hun Sen.

Put together the Superiority Complex of the Thai Elite Establishment, the Phra Vihear Relics building up Nationalism , and the Thaksin selling out Thailand interest issue, the fact is, there was a great deal of “Bad Blood” between Thailand and Cambodia.

  • That “Bad Blood” was heading for an “Explosion” into war.

The Phra Vihear relics, granted to Cambodia by the World Court, some 50 years earlier, still sees the Elite Thai Establishment claiming the Phra Vihear relics as belonging to Thailand. The call, by the Elite Thai Establishment, is for Thailand to reject World Court rulings and to walk out of the World Heritage Foundation. .

  • On 19 December of 2009, a mere 4 years after the 2006 Coup that was to wipe Thailand clean of Thaksin and got him to exile out of Thailand and Abhisit came to power as Thailand’s Prime Minister, a far extreme right-wing Thai newspaper, Ban Muang, reports:

`ตู่’ปูดเอกสารลับฆ่าทักษิณแผนโต้`ฮุนเซน’

  • In translation, quote: “Secret Document to Assassinate Thaksin Exposed to Fight Cambodia’s Hun Sen.”

Thaksin, it appears, will have to be killed in 2009, like he had to be killed in 2006. This time, unlike in 2006 assassination attempt, where soldiers were mostly involved in the planning and execution of the plan, this time, the alleged assassination attempt involved the people in the Abhisit government, and in a foreign country, Cambodia.

20)

Thai Establishment Targets Cambodia:

  • Write it up to be a problem of “Immaturity” or to “Corrupted by Power” but Abhisit’s Security Chief, Suthep, told a local newspaper Thai Rath, that quote: The intelligence agency of a foreign super-power is helping the Thai government go after Thaksin.

And:

  • And write it up to be a problem of “Immaturity” or to “Corrupted by Power” by Abhisit’s Foreign Minister, Kasit, to issued a Thai Foreign Ministry “Emergency Work Guidance Paper” (หนังสือด่วนที่สุดที่ กต.1303/2355 เรื่องแนวทางการดำเนินการกับปัญหาความสัมพันธ์ไทย-กัมพูชา) in the Thai relationship with Cambodia, and in that paper, said quite: “We will seek way to Get Rid Thaksin.”

Of course, Thai Rath reported what Suthep has to say, speculating that it was either the USA’s CIA or the UK’s MI6 that is helping Suthep go after Thaksin. Then of course, the Kasit working paper leaked to Thaksin people, and Abhisit’s government had to come out to say that “Get Rid of Thaksin” does not mean assassinating Thaksin.

But by now, even without the Thaksin issue, the Thai Cambodian situation was heating up to war situation, and the foreign diplomatic community was buzzing with talks.

As part of that talk, on the overall Thai Cambodia relation, was of the potential assassination of Thaksin by the Abhisit’s government, with the help of either the CIA or the MI6, inside Cambodia.

21)

Plot to Assassinate Thaksin in Cambodia

All in all, there were three basic facts on the plot to assassinate Thaksin in Cambodia. First, local newspaper close to the Elite Establishment, was reporting that Thailand’s intelligence apparatus, was tracking and following Thaksin’s movements in Cambodia; second, a leaked Thai Foreign Ministry document said there were plans to “Get Rid of Thaksin,” thirdly, a Thai was captured spying on Thaksin’s flight plan in Cambodia that is linked to F16 interception, and lastly, Hun Sen and Thaksin’s changing security detail in Cambodia.

To begin, the alleged plot to assassinate Thaksin in Cambodia by the Abhisit’s government, with the help of the CIA or MI6, started to solidify, when a group of Thais working at Cambodia’s airport were arrested, for spying on Thaksin’s private jet itinerary.

That spying on Thaksin’s jet itinerary, can only be done by order of Thailand’s intelligence. About the same time the news of the arrested spy was hitting the Thai newspapers, also, on the front page of some local newspaper in Thailand was news that the Thai air force was ordered to put F16 equipped with air to air missiles, to be on standby to “Intercept” Thaksin’s private jet, as Thaksin left Cambodia.

The side-show to that on stand bye F16 news, was a great debate in Thailand, as to if Abhisit and Kasit, will order the F16 to shoot down Thaksin’s jet, if the jet refused to land in Thailand.

  • But while the local Thai press, was going big with the CIA, MI6, Spy, and F16 news, a few newspaper in Thailand began to report on the Thai Cambodia border area security situations. Matichon, a local Thai newspaper, reported that the Cambodian military had put its border area with Thailand, on alert for possible “Infiltration” of arms and personal into Cambodia to assassinate Thaksin.

Local Cambodian press began to report that Thaksin body-guard in Cambodia, were being ordered to be on alert for possible “Sniper Attack” on Thaksin. Then the Cambodian security went on alert, and Thaksin’s visit to some area were cut from the schedule for security concern. Then Thaksin was seen going from place to place with a well concealed bullet prove vest.

Thaksin eventually left Cambodia, after giving a talk to about 500 of Cambodia’s top business people and economist. Concerning his private jet trip, Thaksin, was said to have taken his private jet on a route that does not come near Thailand’s air space, to avoid being “Intercepted” and forced down by Thailand’s F16, inside Thailand.

And as far as the CIA and the MI6 involvement, Suthep appeared to be stating a fact. But the proof, of the involvement of the CIA or MI6, in the “Great Thai Political Divide” would come, years later. Years later, for example, Matichon, reported, that the CIA told the Abhisit’s government, that a sleeping container, behind the Red Shirts stage, at Rajprasong Intersection, where the Red Shirts were protesting, was, quote: :Filled with weapons.”

22)

Abhisit Refute Everything!

At about this time, the link between the Abhisit government, Thailand’s intelligence apparatus, and Thailand’s activity in Cambodia was becomes much clearer. A local English language press, The Nation, reports that Thailand’s Intelligence operatives were tracking and following Taksin in Cambodia.

The Thai Prime Minister Abhisit, chairs the Thai Internal Security Command and other intelligence agencies. Clearly, Abhisit’s reach, have been extended deep inside Cambodia, by way of the Thai intelligence apparatus.

As evidence was mounting, Abhisit came out and refute everything. Thai Rath, a newspaper in Thailand said, quote:

  • นายกฯปฏิเสธแผนลอบฆ่า “ทักษิณ”  (Abhisit refute plan to kill Thaksin)

(Hun Sen Has No Proof of Spying)

(Thepthai, Abhisit personal spokesman, said Hun Sen does not have any concrete proof that a Thai working at Cambodia’s airport was spying for information on Thaksin’s private jet flight schedule)

2 (Chartuporn threaten to expose more Foreign Ministry Documents)

(Chartuporn says he has 9 more pages of documents, on assassination of Thaksin, preparations of war with Cambodia and on the government interfearing into the judicial branch, by telling the courts to move fast on the Thaksin cases to complete them within this year)

(Chatuporn insists the order is to assassinate Thaksin)

(Chartuporn says the Thai word “ขจัด” is the same word in meaning with “กำจัด” where “กำจัด” means kill)

Quiet Again

After that 2009 “Car Bomb” attempt of Thaksin’s motorcade, after the “Frenzy to Kill” from an opportunity window when Thaksin was back in Thailand, and the events in Cambodia in 2009, there had been no more news of assassination attempts on Thaksin, until Myanmar in 2012.

  • Thaksin still travels the globe, making stops, in places like Cambodia, Laos, Hong Kong, China and also Europe and the Middle East. At many of his destinations, his supporters in Thailand, will travel to visit Thaksin, be it anywhere globally. Some friends of Thai Intelligence News, are among those that have traveled the globe to meet Thaksin, and give support to Thaksin.

I often ask these friends, about Thaksin’s security detail.

However, when I think of the news on the threat to Thaksin’s life, often, the first thing that comes my mind, is not even Thaksin or Democracy in Thailand, but Thaksin’s son and daughters.

Over the years, I have read so many reports, about Thaksin’s family in pain and suffering, for all the things that have been going on in Thailand and done to their family. To me, I just can not imaging, living in a similar way of the members of the Thaksin family. Literally speaking, even after writing this report, about all the assassination attempts on Thaksin’s life, I still do not have a clue, what it is like, to be a target of assassination.
